Judge Bennett presided over his fourth jury trial, sitting for Judge Susan Kelly, in the 54th District Court in the case of State of Texas v. Johnathan Leland Estes. The jury convicted Estes of 2 counts of aggravated sexual assault of a 12-year-old with an intellectual disability and 2 counts of indecency with a child by contact with the same child. The jury assessed his punishment at 15 years for both counts of aggravated sexual assault and 5 years for both counts of indecency with a child. Judge Bennett elected to stack the sentences so that Estes must serve a minimum of 20 years before becoming eligible for parole.
